Inspiring Story of Vijay Kadam Ji

This is the story of GenWise Member - Vijay Kadam, a free-spirited soul from Pune whose optimistic outlook on life made all the difference in every step she took!

"Growing up in Pune alongside my family—my parents and two elder sisters—I distinctly remember being the first child born in a government hospital,  all those before me were delivered at home by a Dai maa. Despite societal norms, my father's insistence on education shaped my path. Being the most outspoken and free spirited one in the family, I was always debating people about morals. I do not like dishonest people. Thankfully, my family accepted me for who I was, allowing me the freedom to be myself.

I completed my studies till 10th standard, and started working at the Damle Hospital in Pune - for Rs.1,000 for 4 hours, at that time! It was very good money. I did all sorts of work there, from nursing to cleaning the wards - I do not think any work is small, I very proudly accept doing all of that. The doctors I worked under were very kind, the couple helped me a lot when I was struggling.

But life took a turn when I had to leave my job to care for my sick mother. To make ends meet, I learned to make beedis—a skill passed down by a dear friend's mother. For a decade, I crafted beedis, navigating through personal loss and financial challenges, all while upholding my sense of dignity.

I never wanted to get married or have a partner, this was non-negotiable. My father even agreed to let me live however I wanted! I used to get a lot of rishtas during that time, men coming to my house and asking my parents for my hand. But I never said yes to any. I love my independence way too much for that, I did not want to be tied down to anyone.

During the time I was making beedis, we did not have enough to even eat. My sister had a son around the time who she was not able to take care of, so I took the responsibility of raising him - my Pradeep! I sent him to school, my friends tutored him without any fee, we all made sure he got everything in his childhood. He studied day in and day out to make a successful life for us.

Today, I reside in Bangalore with Pradeep and his family, rooted in gratitude for the journey that brought us here. Engaging with my community, attending GenWise events, and extending compassion to stray dogs are highlights of my days. I am proud to be still friends with all those people I met during my hardships!

Reflecting on my past brings tears to my eyes, but gratitude fills my heart. I am thankful to God and everyone I've met along the way for the happiness and vitality I experience today.”
